Premium Coastal Hay Production

The stage of maturity at harvest is by far the most important factor influencing the quality of hay. Early in the growing season, the plant has fine, leafy growth containing high concentrations of starches, sugars, proteins, and minerals. As the growing season progresses, plants develop elongated stems and seed heads and contain a lower proportion of nutrients and a higher proportion of fiber. The greater the fiber content of hay, the less digestible it is, and the less an animal will consume before it fills its stomach. Therefore, the best hays contain a high proportion of leaves and few seed heads or stems. Harvesting hay can be a delicate balance between quality and yield, but at Wagon Wheel Ranch, we harvest our hay when the plants are tender, fine and leafy. This results in a soft, green bale of hay that is highly palatable and nutrient-rich.

Other important factors that can affect the quality of hay are weeds, fertilization and irrigation.  Weeds often have poor feed value, and some species are toxic to animals. High quality hay comes from a healthy stand of grass with few or no weeds. We routinely monitor and maintain our fields for weed control using mechanical control and only if absolutely necessary, TDA and EPA approved products. We place the utmost importance in the health of our soil. Routine fertilization and harvesting can remove minor elements and lower soil quality. By regularly replenishing the nutrients the plant uses, the soil remains fertile and productive. We fertilize with NOP approved organic products throughout the year and apply minimal amounts of chemical fertilizer during the growing season. Organic fertilizers improve the health and biology of the soil. Healthy soil is the foundation for healthy plants, and healthy plants grow better, have a higher nutritional value, and are more palatable to the animal. Finally, controlled irrigation is essential in the consistent production of quality hay. Inconsistent amounts and frequency of water can reduce the quality and yield of a hay pasture. Our center pivot irrigation system allows us to apply the right
amount at the right time.
